Empathy with Nature
The human population of the world continuous to grow. At the same time, economic prosperity is rising globally. Both developments have led to increased pressures on our environment. Our planet is in intensive care and 9 out of 16 tipping elements already show clear signs of instability. Our mainstream building practice is unsustainable. A redundant system will not solve our biggest challenges. We have to change our system and do things differently in the future. A circular economy is essential, whereby re-used and re-cycled materials from the present building stock form new mines of the future. We need a new spirit of innovation and an explicit commitment to interdisciplinary cooperation on eye level.
Rebuilding Sustainable Cities
Rebuilding Sustainable Cities means giving and taking in equilibrium with nature and requires life cycles thinking in construction that leads to cities for people. Site transformations give existing buildings new and contemporary uses, while re-use and simple construction principles give the existing buildings new beauty:
– Providing shade with many newly planted or kept trees
– Cooling by water evaporation as a result of rainwater capability
– Creating good social climate by designing spaces as meeting points
Sustainable Cities with adaptive and flexible buildings are able to endure the cold and overheating periods, which is becoming more important in the face of climate change. By integrating nature using earth and biobased materials, construction workers and inhabitants will not be exposed by toxic materials.
It reduces transport, allows the local economy to thrive and ensures the building sector long lasting resilience. This leads to a new regenerative designed lifestyle, to the appropriation of the people and it promotes togetherness and interaction.
U-Turn in Building Architecture
Architecture is a practice centered around future-making. We need a turning point in construction. In a relaxed manner we need to move into action in a new modus operandi. An empty field and a new market lie ahead of us. A field for new strategies and preservation of the existing building stock, CO2 savings, renewable and regenerate materials. We must collaborate and approach each other, invent new methods, procedures and products. We can only succeed in this transition process if we are united and combine what makes sense. It asks us to carefully reimagine our building environment with thoughtful and creative vigor. This is closely connected to inspiring and courageous people. We have to be many and we all must act differently. Together we are building this change and our future. Let`s get to work!
