Eric de Lange is Director Sustainability & Compliance at Royal Mosa, a Dutch ceramic tile manufacturer and the only ceramic tile company in the world to achieve Cradle to Cradle Certified® Full Scope Gold certification. With more than 20 years of experience in transformation, supply chain and operations, he is committed to accelerating the transition to a circular built environment. He leads Mosa’s sustainability transformation, focusing on industrial decarbonization, circular systems and responsible value chain management as part of the company’s journey towards Net-Zero CO₂ emissions by 2050.

Beyond the Surface: What does it take to make a ceramic tile truly circular?

The construction industry still operates largely in a linear way. Improving products alone will not make the built environment circular. True circularity requires a fundamental shift in how products are designed, used, recovered, and valued.

Using the journey of Dutch ceramic tile manufacturer Royal Mosa as a case study, this presentation explores how almost two decades of working with the Cradle to Cradle® framework shaped its approach to healthy materials, circular design and the systems required to preserve material value over time. It shares lessons learned on why designing a circular product is only the beginning, and how collaboration across the value chain is essential to making circularity work in practice.
