Regenerative Cities

What would it mean for a city to give back more than it takes? This lecture examines regenerative urbanism and design as an approach that seeks to restore ecological systems, recover resources and strengthen communities, while asking how such ambitions can be measured.

Drawing on a recent international planning publication and a case study of a new city in the Philippines, the lecture considers both the possibilities for planning regenerative settlements and the challenges of transforming existing cities. Chicago offers concrete examples that show what regeneration can look like in practice, while raising a broader question: how can local projects become part of a lasting, equitable transformation across the city?
